COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Rebuild Bay, and the NAACP will host a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the A.D. Harris Learning Center (819 E. 11th Street) with free food and gift card giveaways.  Bay County Coastal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students start the spring semester with classes focused on trades, technology and AI. The curriculum also includes programs in nursing, hospitality and marine technology services to build practical skills.  WJHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews will start 30A drainage repairs soon, leading to road closures that may delay traffic. Residents should plan routes carefully + watch for local updates on the project.  WJHG
  • Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport held a groundbreaking ceremony on Jan. 9 for an expansion (80,000 sqft) in Panama City that adds three gates, six airline baggage offices, four baggage claim carousels, TSA checkpoints and various concessions.  Panama City News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and today at Ascension, Dr. Thomas Johnson introduced a new self-swab HPV test to help women screen for cervical cancer and debunk common myths (the test is aimed at early detection and prevention).  WJHG
  • A local pharmacist recommends healthy eating & citrus fruit consumption to boost immunity and prevent flu, advising community members to incorporate these habits year-round for better health.  WJHG
  • Doctors at the Cardiovascular Institute of Panama City say arrhythmias can make you lightheaded, dizzy and tired. They advise people to see their doctor right away and follow a low salt diet — add 30 minutes of exercise daily to keep your heart strong.  WJHG

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Jan. 12, the Bay soccer coach discussed the serious injury of senior star Ever Salas during a press briefing. He said the team is reviewing player protocols + treatment strategies as they plan their next steps.  WJHG
  • The News-Herald has begun voting for this week's FPL Athlete of the Week, featuring athletes chosen by coaches' nominations and game performance (voters can support their favorites). Votes remain open until noon Friday, Jan. 16.  Panama City News Herald
