EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bay District Schools is launching five new mobile apps to consolidate sports, class schedules, and extracurricular information for high school students (available on the App Store and Google Play Store). Officials plan to develop a similar app for middle schoolers in the future (aiming to reduce calls to school offices). WJHG
- ➤ BDS launched a new app designed to consolidate high school updates, including sports game cancellations + chess club meeting times, to help local students access essential extracurricular information. The app offers a centralized resource for staying updated with school events. WJHG
- ➤ Bay District Schools is seeking mentors (volunteers) from all backgrounds to help guide students in their education and career choices. The program is available now for community members who want to offer support and friendship through mentorship. WJHG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local officials announced a repaving project for Millville and the Downtown North District that will improve the roads, and work is set to begin soon + further schedule details are pending. WJHG
- ➤ The city is hosting town halls for community input on potential park consolidations. A session was held on January 13 at Daffin Park Clubhouse and additional meetings will be held on January 15, 20 and 29 at local venues. City of Panama City
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ During the week of Jan. 5-11, Bay County inspections confirmed that Hardee's at 11769 Panama City Beach Pkwy. and Waffle House at 1901 North Cove Blvd. had high-priority violations (time/temperature issues and undercooked poultry) that were corrected on-site but require further review. - ➤ Ascension Sacred Heart Gulf Hospital was recognized with the 2025 Performance Leadership Award for the second year in a row, officials said on Jan. 13. They credited the honor to the dedication of nurses and care teams. WJHG
- ➤ SWFD held a ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at its main station to honor a fallen colleague (reminding that firefighters face greater cancer risks) during Cancer Awareness Month. WJHG
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Port St. Joe won in overtime Tuesday when their final push secured the win as Mosley fell short. The intense game delivered close competition + excitement for local fans. WJHG
- ➤ Arnold senior basketball leader was named this week’s Walborsky, Bradley and Fleming Student Athlete of the Week after averaging 17 points per game; the award honors his standout performance during the current season. WJHG
- ➤ Arnold's boys soccer team moved to No. 1 in the state after surpassing Cypress Bay on Tuesday, Jan. 13, with a rating of 24.339 and a stronger schedule (12.10) as the regular season winds down. Panama City News Herald
