COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lynn Haven Animal Shelter featured stray dog Bucky during its weekly Shelter Spotlight as Cortney Turner and Donna Bell introduced the pet in need of a loving home. Residents are encouraged to consider adoption to give Bucky a fresh start.  WJHG
  • Lynn Haven commissioners voted last week to raise fees for animal services, and the local shelter says the increase will boost its ability to care for pets.  WJHG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school juniors and seniors will join a pilot firefighter training program at Rutherford High School next school year to earn their firefighter 1 credential. Students can work locally after graduation while continuing training at Gulf Coast State College.  WJHG
  • Bay District Schools is hosting School Counseling Week to emphasize student support through counseling + offer resources for improvement this week. The district has scheduled events to guide both students and staff.  WJHG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local groups rescued 600 cold-stunned turtles over recent weeks and warmed them at Panacea's Gulf Specimen Marine Lab (a record effort). Nearly 200 turtles were released back into the Gulf after successful rehabilitation.  WJHG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Publix Pharmacy offered discount cards for select GLP-1 medications including Wegovy tablets at $149 per month and injectable forms of Wegovy and Ozempic at $199 per month in a Feb. 4 press release. Eligible customers should speak with their pharmacist to confirm pricing and restrictions.  Panama City News Herald

  • Bay County honored its top boys golfers on Feb. 4 - repeat winner Cade Denecke earned Golfer of the Year honors while coach Luke Logan led the Marlins to a county championship win.  Panama City News Herald
  • North Bay Haven’s soccer team made history with a 6 to 0 win against Fernandina Beach on Feb. 4, reaching the Sweet 16 (for the first time). The Buccaneers, led by Hayden Kent’s four-goal performance, will host No. 5 Pensacola Catholic in the regional semifinal on Feb. 10.  Panama City News Herald
