COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Florida Power and Light + Feeding the Gulf Coast will distribute cold weather kits to local seniors; the initiative aims to support the community as cooler weather approaches.  WJHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gulf Coast State College will host the 'Write to Read' theatre performance on Feb. 24 at the Panama City Center for the Arts from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local high school and college creatives will showcase works themed 'RED' with free admission & refreshments provided by the Redfish Foundation.  WJHG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amberlyn Peters was named this week’s Golden Apple Award winner for making science fun at Bay District Schools. The district (hiring up to 25 teachers for its cultural exchange program) said the recognition honors excellence in science education.  WJHG
  • Bay District Schools will hire up to 25 teachers for the TPG cultural exchange program, and the district introduced cultural exchange teacher Ms. Robinson to bring new global ideas to local classrooms.  WJHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Agriculture reopened the No. 1022 North Bay Eastern Section Shellfish Harvest Area for oyster, clam, and mussel harvesting at sunrise today (scallops, shrimp, and crabs remain excluded). Testing confirmed the water and shellfish meet NSSP standards under the Biotoxin Management Plan.  WJHG
  • PCB leaders have introduced the C.A.R.E.S program to recognize hotels, restaurants, bars + entertainment venues that meet higher safety standards during peak times. The initiative will soon help ensure quality service for local visitors.  WJHG
  • On Feb. 10, Panama City commissioners set membership and rental fees for the Martin Luther King Jr. Rec Center, a decision that will affect local community use.  Panama City News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bay Health Foundation awarded over $700,000 in grants to local groups that support mental, physical, and emotional health. The funds will help residents access essential care throughout the community.  WJHG
