- ➤ Capt. Ric Corely, a veteran boat captain, will speak about America’s inland waterways and their role in Bay County shipping on April 28 at 6 p.m. at the Bay County Public Library—he will show a video, answer questions, and display a ship model. Panama City News Herald
- ➤ The Healthy Start Coalition has revived the World's Greatest Baby Shower — a program that gives new and expecting parents vital resources — and the event will soon offer support, education and supplies to local families in Panama City. WJHG

- ➤ On April 4, Surfside Academy held its second special needs prom at Captain Anderson's Restaurant and Waterfront Market. Students danced, took photos at a selfie booth and saw a prom king and queen crowned — school staff said the event gave them a positive experience. Panama City News Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is proposing a three-week bear hunt in December that will allow hunters to harvest 187 black bears across 31 counties via a random drawing for permits; state wildlife biologists will present rules in May and commissioners will vote on the plan in August. Some local residents oppose the proposal and call for funds from hunting permits to be used for improved bear management. Panama City News Herald

- ➤ On Tuesday, Panama City commissioners gave nearly $500,000 in Hometown Revitalization Program funds to local businesses in low- and moderate-income areas to update their buildings with new awnings, storm windows and doors, fresh paint, and new decks—recipients include Alice’s on Bayview, Hunt’s Oyster Bar and Seafood, Little Village, and FINNS Island Style Grub with FINNS set for major changes. - ➤ Former Arnold basketball player Alex Steen announced he will transfer to Florida State University after playing at Florida Southern; he averaged 17.9 points and 10.6 rebounds last season and chose FSU over Kentucky, Louisville and Alabama—saying he is excited to compete near home under coach Luke Loucks. - ➤ On April 7, Panhandle Gator Club members gathered at Rock’it Lanes in Panama City Beach to watch the championship basketball game— the Gators came from behind to defeat the Cougars 65—63. The win marked their third national title and first since 2007. Panama City News Herald
