CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Bob Hurst from the Historical Society of Bay County will present his program (The Day the American Revolution Came to Bay County) on Tuesday, May 26 at the Bay County Public Library. The event will explore key local historical milestones. WJHG
- ➤ Denise Newsome was named this week’s Golden Apple award winner (recognizing her contributions to local culture) as local organizers plan to share more details soon. WJHG
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bay Virtual School hosted its graduation ceremony on May 14 at the Gretchen Nelson Scott Fine Arts Center in Panama City, where 55 graduates received their diplomas. Panama City News Herald
- ➤ NOAA and NWS will host two workshops on Monday, May 18 to teach safe navigation and hazardous weather; one is at Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) and the other at Gulf Coast State College on campus (1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.). - ➤ Florida Senate Bill 538 will require non-traditional student-athletes to play for high schools in their home county starting July 1 + the rule may lead to roster shifts pending Gov. DeSantis’ signature. Panama City News Herald
- ➤ Memorial Day weekend, seen as summer's start, falls on May 25, and many Florida schools will end classes late May—early June. Meteorological summer starts on June 1, with the astronomical season following on June 21. Panama City News Herald

- ➤ On May 15, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis directed flags to be flown at half-staff to honor officers killed or disabled in the line of duty for Peace Officers Memorial Day during Police Week; the measure applied to U.S. and state flags on public buildings and military posts. Panama City News Herald
