  • Joann fabric and craft stores will close by May 31, leaving 23 open in Florida, including the Panama City location at 23rd Street Plaza—shops are discounting remaining inventory by 70% to 90% after the company filed for Chapter 11 for the second time this year; gift cards and returns are not accepted. CRIME NEWS

  • Panama City police arrested 49-year-old Christopher Dugent after responding at around 10 a.m. Monday to a domestic disturbance on the 600 block of East 4th Street—where his wife pleaded for help as he retrieved a firearm from her vehicle and attempted to shoot her, with the weapon failing to discharge—and he now faces charges including attempted murder, false imprisonment, felon in possession of a firearm and violation of probation.  My Panhandle

  • Tony Davis has been named Rutherford High School’s new Athletic Director and Boys Basketball Coach for the 2025-2026 school year—Principal Dr. Todd Mitchell announced his appointment Tuesday morning. Davis brings 24 years of coaching experience and has been part of the athletic program since 2022—his leadership is expected to boost the school’s basketball program.  WJHG
  • Bay High School celebrated its 100th graduation on May 23 at Tommy Oliver Stadium in Panama City—students received their diplomas as officials and teachers marked the milestone.  Panama City News Herald

  • WeatherTiger’s forecast for hurricane season set to begin on June 1 says there will be 16 to 20 tropical storms, 7 to 9 hurricanes and 3 to 4 major hurricanes — with an 85% chance of at least one U.S. landfall, and residents are urged to review their storm preparation plans.  Panama City News Herald

  • Panama City Mayor Michael Rohan and Commissioner Jenna Haligas gave farewell speeches at their final commission meeting as Haligas recalled her eight years in office and Rohan said he did not receive enough support to open the waterfront & new commission members will be sworn in tomorrow at noon at City Hall.  WJHG
  • Florida is launching an AI-based emergency alert system ahead of hurricane season—using radio stations and the BEACON app to send vital safety messages to all counties. State officials say the new network will broadcast alerts faster and more accurately to help people stay safe.  WJHG
