  • From today until July 21, Panama City and nearby areas will host events such as a legal clinic at Bay County Library and a Veteran Coffee & Golf Clinic at Bay Point Golf Club (schedules set by venues), along with a Light & Sound event at PCB Library and a Digital Literacy Class on July 17, plus a career camp at Gulf Coast State College on July 21 (exact times vary by location).  Bay County Coastal

CRIME NEWS

  • An employee at Bay County Jail—Daydrian Lipford—was fired and arrested after he dropped a bag containing 0.4 grams of meth on July 8 while leaving work and admitted using some of the drug on duty, authorities said.  Panama City News Herald
  • Richard Paul Bailey, age 55—a registered sex offender wanted on 91 felony warrants for fraud and racketeering—was arrested Monday at a Cedar Bluff Road residence in Bay County by the Sheriff’s Office after a three-week investigation and is set to be extradited to Georgia for charges including fraudulently obtaining about $3.2 million while 36 year old Brittany Addis was also arrested and three juveniles were turned over to the Department of Children and Families.  My Panhandle
  • The Panama City Police Department is searching for 39-year-old Christopher Wayne Williams who was last seen Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in the 700 block of MLK Boulevard—he is 6’2”, weighs 200 pounds, has brown hair and eyes, and wore a gray shirt, plaid shorts, and white sneakers.  WJHG

  • Florida gas prices dropped 19 cents per gallon in the last 10 days—AAA listed Panama City as one of the least expensive metro markets, though rising oil and gasoline futures may push prices upward soon.  My Panhandle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida schools will start on August 11 for 56 counties and between August 12 and August 14 for the others — a new law lets districts set their own schedules and restrict phone use during class time.  Panama City News Herald
  • The City of Panama City is hosting a Back to School supply drive at City Hall that began on July 14 and will run through August 6 to collect donations for Bay District Schools — the drive aims to support students and teachers as the new school year starts on August 11 and will benefit from a Sales Tax Holiday beginning on August 1.  City of Panama City

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast has partnered with OB Hospitalist Group to offer round-the-clock maternity care as Walton County’s growing population increases the demand for safe deliveries–the hospital delivered over 1,400 babies last year and plans to expand its busy clinics. Hospital CEO Trey Abshier said the partnership is a game changer that will help meet the community’s needs for timely, effective care.  WJHG
  • A new Florida law requires all high school athletes to get a one-time EKG screening to help stop sudden heart deaths starting in the 2025-2026 school year—this rule was set after 16-year-old Chance Gainer collapsed during a football game. Governor DeSantis signed the law last month—screenings will cost no more than $20 and free options are available through nonprofits.  WKGC Public Radio
