CRIME NEWS

  • Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire on Bingoose Lane Wednesday morning that may have been related to domestic violence—authorities said a suspect was stopped on Highway 77, treated at a local hospital, and it appears no one was home when the fire was set.  WJHG
  • State Attorney Larry Basford announced that 41-year-old Branden Gywayne Given, who was released less than a year ago for fentanyl trafficking, was found guilty on July 10 for trafficking in fentanyl and methamphetamine and sentenced to 30 years concurrently — a term that includes a mandatory minimum of 25 years on the fentanyl charge.  Bay County Coastal
  • A Sarasota County man was arrested on June 17 for breaking into ZooWorld after staff noticed a broken fence and surveillance footage showed him creeping on all fours through the property, and he faces charges of burglary and criminal mischief with further charges pending.  WJHG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bay High School Principal Blythe Carpenter was suspended for one week without pay after an HR investigation found she misused school resources for her wedding, using a school golf cart and funds to repaint it—she also had staff help with her event. The district ordered her to repay nearly $1,400 for the repaint and to complete ethics training—actions taken despite her previous strong leadership record.  My Panhandle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 16th, the National Hurricane Center said an area of low pressure called Invest 93L moved westward across the Panhandle and produced disorganized showers—thunderstorms over the region. Forecast models show the system is expected to keep moving west with its center reaching Louisiana’s coast today and flash flooding likely along parts of the north-central Gulf Coast through Friday.  Panama City News Herald

  • Today, a blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross is held at Bill Cramer GM at 2251 West 23rd Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Panama City—donors receive a Red Cross shirt and goodies from sponsors such as Chick-fil-A, Krispy Kreme, Domino's, Fandango, and Blue Bell.  WJHG
