EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bay District Schools announced that cell phones will be banned during school hours to boost student focus & safety. The new policy will take effect soon in all district schools. WJHG
- ➤ FSU Panama City closed its campus Wednesday morning due to a water outage and began repairs to reopen at noon—Gulf Coast State College also shut its campus with no classes held before noon. My Panhandle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bay County Commission is now accepting applications for a six-week Citizens Academy that begins on September 22nd at the Bay County Government Center. The program, which is limited to 25 registrants, will let residents learn how the county government works by hearing from officials and staff and taking a day-long tour of facilities + including the water treatment plant, animal control, emergency operations center and gun range. - ➤ Commissioner Josh Street initiated a change to the water billing policy at Tuesday's meeting and Commissioner Brian Grainger explained that a new formula—dividing estimated amounts by the number of months and then applying a two-month charge—will give residents more accurate bills. Commissioners will review past billing errors that led to high charges, and residents who notice the same charge repeated are urged to call City Hall. My Panhandle
- ➤ Gulf County Commissioners tabled a new animal control ordinance and assigned Commissioner Phillip McCroan to work with St. Joseph Bay Humane Society to create policies for managing aggressive dogs and dog bites—this decision follows a social media firestorm over the proposed measure. WJHG
- ➤ The City Commission adopted Ordinance No. 3271—this update to Chapter 22 adds parking violations and fines for issues like overstay, parking in reserved spots, and missing registration and now includes golf carts under these rules.
