  • Warrior Memorial Reefs Foundation will host the Reels & Spears Gulf Classic fishing tournament on September 12th and 13th at Point South Marina, where teams can compete in both spear and reel fishing competitions & enjoy family festivities while proceeds fund memorial reefs honoring fallen heroes.  Bay County Coastal

CRIME NEWS

  • The Bay County Sheriff’s Office arrested three Michigan men on July 30 for using fake IDs to open bank accounts at several local banks—two were detained at a gas station near Kingswood Road while a third was caught at a business near Highway 77 and 23rd Street, and investigators said the probe continues.  Bay County Coastal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Center for the Arts in Panama City hosted an opening reception on August 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—introducing two new exhibitions featuring local artists Willie Morris and Noah Beich. Willie Morris’s graphite series See. Experience. Imagine. is on display in the Main Gallery while Noah Beich’s work is shown in the Miller Gallery, with both exhibitions available for viewing through August 30.  Bay County Coastal
  • Kaleidoscope Theatre in Lynn Haven announced Season 51, which will include seven plays that bring laughs, drama, and heartfelt moments — season tickets are now on sale with a discount for returning buyers of The Play That Goes Wrong. The season starts on August 15 and will run with a mix of comedies, mysteries, and musicals — giving local audiences a range of shows to enjoy.  Bay County Coastal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 22, the Bay County School Board met at the Nelson Building to honor summer graduates and finalize a cell phone policy that bans wireless devices during school hours. The board also suspended Bay High Principal Carpenter Thompson-Blythe following policy violations and an Inspector General investigation—actions that have stirred debate in the community.  Bay County Coastal
  • On July 24th, the Bay County School Board approved a new advertising budget of $648 million that cuts spending from last year—reducing funds, easing staff roles, and raising local property taxes slightly due to state rules. The board will meet on July 31st, August 26th, and September 11 to adjust the budget before final adoption.  Bay County Coastal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tech Sgt. Keosha Middleton received the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award on June 11 at Tyndall Air Force Base for using CPR and training to help an elderly patron who collapsed at Yokota Air Base—her quick actions and support work also earned her the Airlift/Tanker Association Young Leadership Award.  Bay County Coastal
  • The Panama City Charter Review Advisory Board met on July 31 to begin reviewing the city charter and introduced its members appointed by city commissioners (including Chair Brandon Burg and Vice Chair Brandon Henderson-Jansenius). The board will meet on September 4 in the Executive Conference Room at City Hall to set schedules and plan community outreach under the Florida Sunshine Law.  Bay County Coastal
  • The city of Panama City is planning to boost school zone safety by proposing an ordinance to install speed-detecting devices (which target only extreme speeders). Officials say tickets will be reviewed before being mailed and the measure will be voted on at the August 12 commission meeting (pending final approval).  WJHG
