  • Spirit Halloween plans to open 95 stores across 67 Florida cities — including one in Panama City Beach — in August as the retailer hires more than 1,200 workers statewide as part of 50,000 new hires nationwide for the 2025 Halloween season.  Panama City News Herald

  • Bay County schools will resume Monday, Aug. 11—parents can register students and access bus routes online while the state’s back-to-school sales tax holiday runs until Aug. 31 covering computers, supplies, bags and clothing.  Panama City News Herald
  • Bay District Schools held a press conference on bus safety as they prepare for the first day of school on August 11—officials shared key safety protocols for student transportation.  Panama City News Herald
  • USA Today has named Tom P. Haney Technical College among the top vocational schools in America— the school offers hands-on training in automotive technology, aviation mechanics, healthcare and HVAC. Congress signed a bill to expand Pell Grants for career training, and the law will go into effect in July.  My Panhandle
  • FSU Panama City will host a Career & Internship Fair on Oct. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Holley Academic Center’s St. Joe Community Foundation Lecture Hall to connect employers with FSU Panama City and Gulf Coast State College students & community members seeking job opportunities amid regional growth.  Panama City News Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eight opioid manufacturers are nearing settlement in a lawsuit as the Bay County Commission gave their attorney Tuesday authority to negotiate the payout, and officials said some funds may go to help recovery treatment at the local jail (using funds from past recovery programs).  WJHG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials warned that Vibrio vulnificus — a bacteria that can cause dangerous infections — has led to 13 cases and 4 deaths in Florida as summer heat drives locals to the Gulf Coast. Experts advise that those with cuts or weakened immune systems should take extra caution when in salt water or when handling raw seafood.  Panama City News Herald
