  • On August 7, Panama City VFW Post 8205 honored seven Purple Heart recipients with a ceremony that featured speeches from retired Air Force Lt. Col. Janet Pattison and retired Army Chaplain David Trogdon—both speakers stressed the award’s rich history and the need for community among veterans.  Panama City News Herald
  • Officials and residents gathered at Daffin Park today to rededicate Messick Field in honor of coach Raymond Messick (who spent 29 years coaching local youth sports) after the field was repaired from damage by Hurricane Michael.  My Panhandle
  • The Filipino American Association of Bay County hosts its Barrio Fiesta event today at the St. Peter & Paul Church Parish Hall, serving Filipino food starting at 11 a.m. and featuring cultural dances to celebrate a longstanding harvest tradition.  My Panhandle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Staff at Oscar Patterson Academy celebrated with bacon cheeseburgers today when the school improved its grade from an F to a B, according to Bay County Schools. The Bay District School Board approved a turnaround plan using community resources to help teachers and students perform better in 2024 to 2025 after the school reopened following four years of closure after Hurricane Michael.  My Panhandle
  • Bay District Schools need to fill over 50 positions before school starts Monday as they seek 16 teachers, 40 para-professionals, and 200 substitute teachers; applications remain open online until all spots are filled.  WJHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A petition to recall Lynn Haven Mayor Jesse Nelson was struck down after a date error left only 226 valid signatures from the 1,535 needed. The recall committee said they will restart the process+ gather new signatures to meet the requirement.  Panama City News Herald
