- ➤ A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend’s 7-year-old son on Saturday night near WS Crab House—officials said the child is recovering in a local hospital and that a Panama City resident helped dispose of the weapon. My Panhandle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today at the school board meeting, Bay District Schools chose Lord and Sons Construction to build the new Tyndall K-8 School; it will serve up to 1,200 students and be ready for the 2028-2029 school year while the board negotiates fees and selects a site and design. WJHG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Florida homeowners are advised to review their insurance policies and document their home conditions as Tropical Storm Erin is set to strengthen into a hurricane tomorrow — taking pictures and making lists now can help secure better payouts if damage occurs. Erin is moving quickly west and is predicted to become a major hurricane by late Sunday while its path remains uncertain. Panama City News Herald
- ➤ The National Hurricane Center is tracking three systems—one a disturbance near the north-central Gulf that is moving onshore today and may bring heavy rain and flash flooding to the Panhandle. Tropical Storm Erin is expected to become the Atlantic season's first hurricane within 48 hours and intensify into a major storm in the next five days. Panama City News Herald

- ➤ This morning the Panama City Commission approved an ordinance that uses automated license plate readers and cameras to enforce speed limits in school zones for safety. City staff will begin planning the system—set to start on the first day of school in January after a 30-day warning—with a four to one vote. City of Panama City
- ➤ The Florida Public Service Commission voted to delay technical hearings on FPL’s request to raise utility rates for 2026—2029 while FPL and 10 groups work to finalize a settlement agreement by Aug. 20. FPL said the deal will help keep bills below the national average and allow continued investments in its electric grid. WJHG
