Good morning, Panama City.
From September 1 to September 7, local community events are happening in Panama City, Panama City Beach and Mexico Beach with farmers' markets, live music and activities for seniors—Music in the Park is a special event on September 4 in Mexico Beach—.
The week gives residents and visitors many ways to get together.
Panama City Beach lifeguards reported that safety education helped reduce rescues during the Labor Day holiday as weather was good but winds still prompted officials to warn swimmers to stay on their floats—visitors were urged to follow surf warning flags at all public beach accesses.
Patrick Chapin has submitted his resignation as President and CEO of the Bay County Chamber of Commerce with his departure effective September 26th—he has accepted the CEO role at Camp Boggy Creek where he will serve children with serious illnesses.
The chamber will soon form an executive search committee to hire a new leader.
In July, FWC issued a permit for a giant manta ray caught off Panama City Beach to be sent to Sea World Abu Dhabi—this follows a 2023 incident when Dynasty Marine captured a manta ray that died in captivity.
Activists and the Marine SAL criticized the practice, noting that Florida is the only state that permits live removal of endangered species for commercial entertainment.
On Monday before 2:00 p.m., beach safety crews rescued 15 pelicans that became entangled in fishing lines near piers—fishermen are urged to secure the bird and call for help rather than cutting the line.
