CRIME NEWS

  • The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported on Wednesday morning in Fountain that a deputy encountered a man walking on Webber Street near Highway 231 with a rifle and fired when the man began shooting at him; the man later died at the hospital and the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.  WJHG
  • Deputies responded to 911 calls near Webber Road yesterday morning about a man with a rifle who shot at a deputy, the deputy returned fire, and the man died in hospital (the deputy is on administrative leave) as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.  My Panhandle

CULTURE NEWS

  • FSU Panama City will host an evening with author Timothy C. Finley on Sept. 9 at the Holley Center—he will promote his debut novel Kinth, offer a free reception, and the first 50 registrants will get a free copy.  Panama City News Herald
  • FSU Panama City will host the month-long contemporary art exhibit Many Hands Make Light Work that features local artists Mandy Yourick and Jamie Zimche with a public reception at the Holley Academic Center atrium from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 19— the show includes site-based textile forms, wall-hung works, and a participatory workshop and will run through Oct. 18 with free admission.  My Panhandle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The inaugural class of ten students at Haney Technical College began a three-year Marine Electrician Apprenticeship program to earn industry-recognized certifications—students are learning through coursework and mentorship from Eastern Shipbuilders. The program, part of Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s BUILD initiative, will provide hands-on training that paves a clear career path in shipbuilding.  My Panhandle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bay County officials and FSU Panama City have teamed up to fix water quality issues by awarding $500,000 in Restore Act funds for water surveys. They will use DNA sampling and stable isotope analysis to check for bacteria and excess nitrogen in Bay County—data that will guide future cleanup efforts.  My Panhandle
