COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pineapple Willy’s started its week-long charity event today and will donate all its profits until September 14th to Bay County nonprofits—honoring founder William ‘Pine’ Buskell and aiding groups like Beach Care Services and Girls Inc. that support the local community.  My Panhandle
  • Bay County hosts a week-long series of community events from today to September 14—featuring farmers' markets, circus acts, live music, senior programs, safety courses, and food truck festivals in Panama City, Panama City Beach and Mexico Beach.  Bay County Coastal
  • Trinity Mooney started the PCB Walking Club by posting TikTok videos to invite local women and has gathered nearly 100 members since July. The group meets five days a week for walks along routes on 30A—Schooner’s Beach.  WJHG
  • Eight-year-old Vyla Leynes, a cancer survivor from the Sweet Bay neighborhood, held a lemonade stand that raised over a thousand dollars for pediatric cancer research via the Rally Foundation—she hoped to help kids with cancer when research funding was cut.  WJHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • WonderWorks in Panama City Beach is hosting a sensory-friendly day this weekend when the center will lower its volume and adjust exhibits to help guests with sensory sensitivities—families from across the region are traveling long distances to experience the calmer, hands-on STEAM displays. The center said it will offer these inclusive events again in the future.  My Panhandle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida’s health department said it began changing school vaccine rules on September 3 and that the new plan will drop mandates for diseases like chickenpox, hepatitis B, Hib influenza and pneumococcal diseases in about 90 days—while vaccines for measles, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, mumps and tetanus will stay required. Lawmakers may later decide to extend the change to cover more diseases.  My Panhandle

  • On Sept. 4, Ascension Sacred Heart Bay introduced its new AFib software—designed to improve heart surgery—to the media.  Panama City News Herald
  • Florida State University Panama City will host its annual suicide awareness summit on Sept. 26 at the Holley Academic Center—its schedule includes seminars, workshops, and optional suicide prevention skills training from 1:30 p.m.—2:30 p.m. with keynote speaker Michelle Lawrence and guest Anna Hunter; licensed mental health providers and nurses can earn continuing education credits while learning about vital community support resources.  Panama City News Herald
