COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WJHG today has launched a new First Alert weather team led by Ryan Michaels to provide fast and accurate weather updates for Panama City—this team of five experienced meteorologists will deliver forecasts and live coverage to help local families stay safe during severe weather events.  WJHG
  • Ginny O'Hare served for 22 years at the Clifford Chester Sims State Veterans Nursing Home where she built an activities program that gave residents purpose and created a family feeling. She is retiring today and said she will keep checking in on the home + spend more time with her grandkids, travel, and play the piano.  WJHG
  • The Bay Council on Aging hosted an open house to celebrate its newly decorated activity room with support from the Ukulele Orchestra of Saint Andrews—local seniors visited to admire new paintings of familiar Florida scenes completed after nine months of work by community artists. The event marked a meaningful effort to brighten a space long cherished by the center's clientele.  WJHG
  • Will Rose from the Bay County Animal Shelter featured a 1-year-old Husky mix named Nova in this week's Shelter Spotlight, noting she was surrendered, is spayed, and up to date on her shots, and she shows friendly behavior with both animals and people. The shelter believes Nova will thrive in an active family—one that can match her energy.  WJHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bay County will host a series of fall events starting with a food truck festival in Panama City Beach on Sept. 13 and continuing with concerts, art exhibits, and Oktoberfest celebrations — with additional community events scheduled through November.   • Comedian Brad Upton, known for his Dry Bar Comedy special watched by over 16 million viewers, will perform one night — at Capt. Anderson’s Event Center in Panama City Beach on Sept. 28 with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m.  Panama City News Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Florida's hurricane season runs from June 1st until November 30th and has been quiet so far, but meteorologists say tropical activity will increase later in September. Experts project 13 to 18 named storms this season — prompting residents to stay alert for changing weather conditions.  Panama City News Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital opened a new physician office in Panama City at 2202 State Ave, Suite 111 on Sept. 9. The office is led by Dr. Eric Sandwith (a cardiothoracic surgeon) who also practices with HCA Florida Heart & Lung (Fort Walton Beach) as he works to increase patient care in Northwest Florida.  Panama City News Herald
  • FSU Health and Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare are building a new medical campus in Panama City Beach. The first office building — with urgent care and other services — has been open for over a year while a 180-bed hospital remains under construction and will hire local graduates when complete.  WJHG
  • Demolition began on two buildings at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay and will soon include a third. The medical offices have been removed for handicap parking while the EMS building, which started demolition Sept 2, is set to finish next week—no timeline has been provided for the outpatient center.  My Panhandle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Third Annual Swing to Save Golf Tournament will be held tomorrow, September 12, and organizers are preparing for the event—local golfers are expected to join and support the fundraiser.  WJHG
  • The Arnold High School boys golf team defeated Bozeman and Bay at Bay Point on Tuesday with a team score of 153, and Ethan MacGregor earned medalist honors with a 35. The senior-led team plans to advance at the Bay County championship on October 14 at Panama City Country Club—aiming for the state title.  Panama City News Herald
