COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Libraries across Bay County are promoting literacy during Library Card Sign-Up Month by inviting residents to sign up with a valid photo ID and proof of address to access free resources—like computers, a digital media lab, and the Libby app with over 50,000 digital items.  WJHG
  • People from across America will join the free Walk for Lives event on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 9 a.m. at Springfield walking Park—hosted by Evers House to raise awareness of fentanyl poisoning and honor lives lost. The nonprofit, which has served over 400 individuals since 2016, will partner with United Against Fentanyl to offer a vendor fair, t-shirts, swag, and refreshments for all who attend.  My Panhandle

  • Last Tuesday, a fire on Brannon Road destroyed Megan Hatchell’s home while she was in hospital after surgery, leaving her three children without shelter plus a local GoFundMe and the Red Cross providing support.  My Panhandle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eastern Shipbuilding Group and HII Ingalls Shipbuilding have struck a deal at the Nelson Street facility in Panama City to build structural units for the U.S. Navy’s Flight III destroyers. The partnership follows a successful DDG program and includes summer infrastructure improvements that will boost production capacity—supporting rising Navy demand.  WJHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15th and local food truck owners Ruth and Olga bring Latin American flavors to Panama City. Their trucks on 15th street serve tacos, pupusas, quesadillas and other dishes—made fresh every day for the celebration.  WJHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Panama City Beach Government announced portions of West Park Drive between Pier Park Drive and L.C. Hilton Jr. Drive will close Saturday, September 20, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. for the Cirque Under the Stars 2025 event—residents and visitors should use alternate routes and exercise caution near the closed roadway.  My Panhandle
  • Today, residents in Bay, Calhoun and Gulf counties can update their voter registration at events held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at local Supervisor of Elections offices—snacks, gift drawings and the requirement for a driver’s license and Social Security card help make the process simple.  My Panhandle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gulf Coast doctors at Sacred Heart are using telehealth that changed from paper charts to virtual visits—boosting the service to about 3,000 outpatient visits every month and growing since the pandemic. The team says virtual care will keep expanding even though it will never fully replace in-person visits.  WJHG
  • Inspections between Sept. 8 and 14 by the Division of Business and Professional Regulation found that four Bay County restaurants including All American Diner, JAA's Kitchen, Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe and Thomas Donut & Snack Shop had high-priority violations such as unsafe food temperatures and expired licenses—while other local establishments earned perfect scores.  Panama City News Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Panama City News-Herald launched a poll for the FPL Football Player of the Week where athletes are chosen based on coaches' nominations and game performance—voting remains open until noon Friday. The previous week's winner was Zabeyon Morgan of Bay High.  Panama City News Herald
  • Panama City Panthers are hosting tryouts at H.G. Harder’s Recreation Complex on September 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants must be 18 or older by February and pay a $20 registration fee—team officials expect strong competition as they build on their recent championship win.  Panama City News Herald
  • Bay County high schools invite the community to vote on which team creates the best football atmosphere at Friday night games. Voting closes at noon on Tuesday, September 23 & the poll includes input from fans, bands, cheerleaders and mascots.  Panama City News Herald
