COMMUNITY NEWS

  • American Legion Post 392 will host its POW MIA Ceremony tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at 535 Oak Avenue in Panama City—food plates will be available from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a $5 donation while a missing man table with symbolic items honors POWs and MIAs, and Panama City Mayor Allan Branch is expected to attend.  My Panhandle
  • Officer Jasley Medley saved a choking woman at Castaway Seafood in Bonifay before her shift—she used her Heimlich skills during a busy dinner rush. She had also rescued a mother and child from drowning last year, an act that earned her a life-saving award.  WJHG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A wildfire covers 50 acres near Panama City Beach—officials report that a controlled burn jumped the line at Hwy 79, forcing neighborhoods west of the road to evacuate. Both north and south lanes on Hwy 79 are closed and officials urge drivers to avoid the area as the fire remains 0% contained.  WJHG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Last week, Bay EDA officials introduced three new companies that added over 750 jobs in aviation, aerospace, and manufacturing in Bay County. The agency is recruiting projects that could add 1,000 more high-skilled jobs and nearly half a billion dollars in capital investment.  My Panhandle

  • Bay County is offering fall entertainment from today through November with events including the Backstage Pass concert series on the Marina lawn, a downtown Volksmarch on Sept. 26, and local Oktoberfests and fairs that feature live music, food vendors, and family activities—ensuring a busy season for local residents.  Panama City News Herald

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida leads the nation in attracting skilled talent while Panama City ranks fourth among Bay County’s mid-sized regions for job growth. Local colleges like FSU Panama City and Gulf Coast State College partner with employers to train students in high-demand fields — backed by over $700 million in workforce education funding statewide.  My Panhandle
  • Gas prices in Florida dropped to an average of $2.96 per gallon for regular fuel on Monday, down from $3.03 last week, according to the EIA. The state's rate is about 6.4% lower than the national average of $3.17 + it is 3% lower than the price measured a year ago.  Panama City News Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bay County and Northwest Florida Water Management District officials announced a cleanup along Bayou George Creek in Panama City on Sept. 16, 2025. Four miles of the creek will be cleared of organic debris by March 14, 2026—Zulu contractors and county workers will lead the effort.  Panama City News Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Panama City Downtown Improvement Board discussed a tax increment financing program that would reimburse property taxes when projects increase property values downtown—aiming to attract investment, update buildings and improve parking. Officials are finalizing a template that could offer developers two tax credits once the program is approved.  My Panhandle
  • Panama City adopted Ordinance No. 3271 to improve traffic safety and reduce parking congestion—after a September warning period, fines from $20 to $250 will be applied to parking violations including golf carts starting Oct. 1.  City of Panama City
  • An unofficial leaning house off Thomas Drive, which went viral for being knocked over twice by storms, will begin demolition next Monday following a permit issued on September 10 and an order requiring its removal by October 31 to avoid a $1,000 per day fine—neighbors said they are happy as it should reduce tourist disruptions.  WJHG
  • Panama City officials are studying a plan to turn the ruined Panama City Mall into a new performing arts and event center on property owned by private investors — a $15,000 feasibility study from Destination Panama City will check if it can boost local jobs and tourism. The study will take about a year and if results are favorable, officials will begin talks with the main owner.  My Panhandle

  • Week 5 Bay County high school football games begin Thursday and Friday nights as fans follow live scores and results from games streamed on the NFHS Network + the public is asked to report scores to the reporter.  Panama City News Herald
