- ➤ Panama City is gearing up for a busy October with events such as a fire department open house on Oct. 3 at Fire Station 2, National Night Out on Oct. 7 at Gulf Coast State College, a dedication ceremony for a new southern live oak on Oct. 10 at Oaks by the Bay Park, and a cemetery restoration on Oct. 25 at Historic Millville Cemetery — all set to bring families together, support the environment, and honor local history. - ➤ Bay County lost iconic local figure Gus Butchikas on September 21 after his battle with cancer. The son of Angelo Butchikas, he ran the family restaurant and influenced local politics while perfecting recipes still made by relatives. WJHG
- ➤ Over the weekend, Port St. Joe held Chance Gainer Day to raise funds for student scholarships and local groups celebrated 30 years of the St. Joseph Bay Buffer Preserve. - ➤ FSU Panama City received a $194K grant from the St. Joe Community Foundation to help support three programs that boost science education, clean the estuary, and improve diving research—offering more opportunities for local students. My Panhandle
- ➤ A Jackson County School District bus was evacuated on Monday — all students were safely taken home on another bus — with an investigation underway. WJHG
- ➤ FSU Panama City will launch an undergraduate nursing program in partnership with the Tallahassee College of Nursing—funded by a $10,000,000 gift from the Fairholme Foundation—expected to begin in fall of 2027 and work with local hospitals to meet nursing needs. WJHG

- ➤ A wildfire covering 2 acres erupted near the corner of State and Baldwin Avenues in Panama City on Sept.20 and was fully contained by Sept.22—officials report that a burn ban remains in effect as drought conditions and high fire danger persist despite light showers on Sept.21. - ➤ On Saturday morning, runner Chris Marchand encountered a rare melanistic bobcat on the Lynn Haven Rail Trail in Bay County and recorded the animal before it walked back into the woods—he said he stayed at a safe distance while waiting for his wife. My Panhandle
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Families in Bay County can receive autism help from the Gulf Coast Autism Clinic and FSU Panama City’s Early Childhood Autism Program, which work to give children proper diagnosis and teach easier communication and home routines. Clinic owner Kuryn Wheeler said more children are being diagnosed as awareness grows — trained technicians help by teaching basic skills for everyday life. WJHG
