CULTURE NEWS

  • Panama City Comedy will host veteran comedian Brad Upton at Capt. Anderson’s Event Center in Panama City Beach on Sunday, September 28th at 7 p.m., with doors opening an hour early—he will perform his widely popular clean comedy act as part of his cross-country tour.  My Panhandle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • CareerSource Gulf Coast and the Military & Family Readiness Center at Tyndall Air Force Base will host a job fair on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Horizons Club, Ballroom B at 209 Louisiana Ave — the event invites local job seekers with base access to meet employers such as Tom P. Haney Technical College, Gulf Coast State College, Eastern Shipbuilding Group, and the City of Lynn Haven.  My Panhandle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSU Panama City announced a new degree that supports Bay County's mission to keep students local by providing an opportunity to study close to home.  WJHG
  • The St. Joe Community Foundation donated $194,212 to FSU’s Panama City campus on Sept. 22 to support artificial reef surveys, an oyster shell recycling program, and K-12 technology clubs that will offer summer camps in Bay and Walton counties. The funds benefit the Advanced Science Diving Program, the St. Joseph Bays Estuary Program, and ASCENT—Advancing Science and Career Education in New Technologies.  Panama City News Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DOH-Bay lifted water quality health advisories for three sites—Panama City Beach Access #41 at 11211 Front Beach Road, Rick Seltzer Park at 7419 Thomas Drive, and Carl Gray Park at Collegiate Drive—indicating improved conditions.  WJHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Panama City approved a contract with RedSpeed to install automated speed detection systems in 11 school zones with a tentative start on January 1 and a 30-day data review period before tickets are issued. One commissioner dissented—citing concerns about revenue generation—and a police officer will review every violation.  My Panhandle
  • The Panama City Police Department will host a free car seat check-up event at Dunkin’ Donuts on 23rd St from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27—certified safety technicians will inspect car seat installations and answer parents’ questions.  WJHG
  • Demolition of the famous leaning house on Thomas Drive began Tuesday morning after permits were issued on September 10. The owner must complete the demolition by October 31 (to avoid a $1,000-per-day fine) and the house, knocked over twice by storms, went viral on social media.  WJHG

  • Sheila Tison, a nurse at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, is retiring after 45 years of service—she mentored hundreds and cared for patients during Hurricane Michael and COVID.  WJHG

  • On Sept. 22, Jonathan Hammond, head coach at Arnold, handed out the inaugural Jack Anderson Center Referee awards in Lynn Haven to top soccer referees chosen by Bay County coaches—recognizing excellence in the sport.  Panama City News Herald
  • Arnold soccer coach Jonathan Hammond held a new awards event Tuesday night to recognize local referees, with longtime official Jack Anderson receiving the inaugural legacy award—further, high school coaches voted to honor four referees who served as center, assistant, and fourth officials.  Panama City News Herald
