COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Panama City Beach began demolishing its notorious Leaning House that had served as an eyesore and safety hazard after damage from Hurricane Michael and a January tornado. Bay District Schools reviewed a proposal to start a Turning Point USA club while Panama City approved school zone speed cameras at 11 schools, Lynn Haven adopted its new budget and tax rate, and Gulf County commissioners sent a letter opposing a nursing home accepting forensic psychiatric patients from Chattahoochee State Hospital.  My Panhandle
  • The old building that once housed Foghorn’s is being torn down, and the bar closed its Thomas Drive location earlier this month—its owners plan to find a new space soon.  WJHG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews demolished the tilted three-story house at 5101 Gulf Drive in Panama City Beach that became famous online after an EF-3 tornado shifted it in January 2024—legal disputes delayed its removal.  Panama City News Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport will start its 80,000 square foot terminal expansion — adding three extra gates and relocating key facilities to meet rising travel demand, while construction crews will add fences and adjust traffic flow in October. Executive Director Parker McClellan said the groundbreaking work will begin around December or January to support growing passenger numbers.  WJHG
  • Visit Panama City Beach launched its 'Shop the Shore' passport challenge—shoppers pick up a passport at the Visitor Center and collect stickers from shore-themed businesses—and if they return with three or more stickers they will earn a prize for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29.  Panama City News Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Springfield police are auctioning a partially scrapped airplane fuselage dumped near the 800 block of Transmitter road in July 2024 after two individuals were linked to the case, and local buyers can preview the plane and a boat combined as a 'Seaplane' Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with bidding starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the Florida Auction Network lot at 3847 East Business 98 — all proceeds will help fund local law enforcement.  My Panhandle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida gas prices rose to an average of $3.01 per gallon on Monday from $2.96 last week, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration—Florida's prices are about 5.2% below the national average of $3.17.  Panama City News Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University received a historic $10 million gift from The Fairholme Foundation on Sept.22 to expand its College of Nursing program at its Panama City campus—this donation will create scholarships for students from Bay, Walton, and Gulf counties, address the nursing shortage in NW Florida, and support forthcoming renovations and new hires.  Panama City News Herald
  • Gulf Coast State College is offering a no tests, no grades, no stress noncredit enrichment program for active — senior adults at its Panama City Campus running from September 26 until October 31 with courses costing $125 each. Registration is open now and program coordinator Lara Herter is available to assist at the Student Union West building, Room 334.  My Panhandle
  • Randy Hanna, dean of FSU Panama City, announced on Sept 23rd that a new biomedical sciences program was created to launch next fall and prepare Bay County students for various health care careers—housed in the College of Medicine.  Panama City News Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Panama City officials will hold a workshop in late October or early November to plan what happens after the Neighborhood Stabilization Program ends. They will talk about handling rising costs and using over $2 million in reserves to support affordable housing – the meeting aims to shape the city's long-term approach.  My Panhandle
  • Panama City will enforce a new parking fine schedule on Oct. 1 after city commissioners approved fines ranging from $20 to $250 for violations. Police issued warnings in September to let drivers adjust — the rules apply to all vehicles including golf carts.  My Panhandle

  • The building that once housed Foghorn’s is being torn down as demolition enters its second day—after it was knocked over by Hurricane Michael in 2018 and again by tornadoes in 2024.  WJHG
