COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jerry Tabatt—a longtime WMBB meteorologist and community helper—died Monday at Shands Hospital in Gainesville after losing his battle with cancer. He was 76, served in the United States Air Force, and was known for helping in local events—making Panama City his home.  My Panhandle
  • Today, the Central Panhandle Fair in Bay County opens its gates at 6 p.m. with a $25 entry fee, offering rides, fair food, live music and vendors — off-duty BCSO deputies will secure the grounds as the fair runs until Oct. 4 with cash-only entry and no weapons allowed.  Panama City News Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 27, a bottlenose dolphin named Samira died in her enclosure at Gulf World Marine Park — a necropsy report later revealed she ingested concrete fragments from broken enclosures and she was the fifth dolphin to die before a criminal investigation began.  My Panhandle
  • Bay County will host its biannual Waste Amnesty Days on October 17 and October 18 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Steelfield Landfill for residents to drop off bulk items, household hazardous waste and trash for free with valid proof of residency—helping them safely declutter and protect the local environment.  Panama City News Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, the City of Lynn Haven suspended police chief Ricky Ramie after an internal investigation found his personal use of a city golf cart and other actions violated department policies, and he retired soon after his suspension. The investigation reported unauthorized purchases, policy breaches, and a failure to report an accident — all contributing to questions about his conduct.  My Panhandle
  • Panama City officials inspected Pat and Thomas Sabiston’s water system on Monday—checking the plumbing and city water connection after the couple disputed an $880 bill and used well water for over a year. The city will restore water service later this week once adjustments are made and billing guidelines are reviewed to address similar issues.  WJHG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ascension Sacred Heart Bay is expanding its cancer care after Hurricane Michael damaged the hospital nearly seven years ago by adding Dr. Andrew Weber (a local oncologist who served Bay County for 15 years) to its team. He will start seeing patients on October 1 and the hospital will add a mobile PET scan on campus by early November.  WJHG

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Andy’s Flour Power Cake and Bakery at 2629 Thomas Drive in Panama City Beach has been named one of the Top 20 Friendliest Places in the South by Southern Living. Chef-owner John Certo said he is honored by the recognition—he and his team serve fresh breakfast and lunch daily.  Panama City News Herald

  • More than 20 swim teams gathered at Frank Brown Park on Sept. 27 for the PCB Invitational—Mosley and NBH swimmers rose to the challenge.  Panama City News Herald
  • Last week, North Bay Haven’s Tay Brooks won the FPL Athlete of the Week poll with over 25,000 votes—Bay High’s Omari Johnson came in second with just over 47% of the vote, and voting for this week’s high school athletes is now open.  Panama City News Herald
