On Saturday 30 years ago, Hurricane Opal hit the Panhandle as a Category four storm that weakened to a Category three before making landfall in Pensacola—damaging the area with over $2 billion in costs.

The storm sparked growth that transformed Panama City Beach from a small holiday town into a major tourist spot.

On Saturday night, Krewe of St. Andrews hosted its annual Halloween costume party and raffle in Panama City to raise funds for scholarships and charities—attendees paid $30 for entry, which included a raffle ticket and access to dancing, food, a cash bar and a donation drive for the Children’s Advocacy Group. The event aimed to support local families in need and offer a fun, community-focused evening.

The Down Syndrome Association of the Emerald Coast Gulf Coast held its annual buddy walk at Tommy Oliver Stadium Saturday—where music, laughter, and support raised down syndrome awareness—bringing together families and local resources.

Panama City Beach’s Oktoberfest kicked off Friday when Mayor Tettemer tapped the keg in Aaron Bessant Park—launching a celebration with authentic German food and beer, family activities like face painting and bounce houses, and a stein hoisting competition that sends the winner to state finals and eventually nationals. Oktoberfest continues Saturday and Sunday with daily activities starting at noon.
