COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A traveling tribute honoring fallen heroes will open at VFW Post 2185 at 2136 Sherman Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. and run until Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 9 a.m., and the free site will offer help to visitors finding names on the Global War on Terror Wall of Remembrance — a memorial dating back to 1983.  My Panhandle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ashley Burlon from the Northwest Regional Library System explained that cooler weather is a great time for spooky book picks and fall fun—like a vegetable seed packet giveaway and a Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt—to help local residents enjoy cozy reading.  WJHG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • FWC announced that the recreational and commercial stone crab harvest season will begin Oct. 15 and remain open through May 1 with closing on May 2 — recreational crabbers aged 16 or older must register online annually and follow size and trap rules to harvest safely.  My Panhandle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bay County approved funding for a new fire station off Highway 388 in West Bay, with most costs covered by the St. Joe Company and a portion by county impact fees. Construction will begin once permits are approved and is expected to finish within a year — the station will provide cross-trained fire rescue and EMS services for the growing community.  WJHG
  • Governor Ron DeSantis met with Bay County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning — he talked about the law enforcement bonus program that awarded $63 million and sent out over 9,400 checks. He said 2,000 recruits came from outside the state and 734 more bonus checks will be mailed soon.  WJHG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ascension Florida is offering financial help for mammogram checkups at Sacred Heart Bay, Emerald Coast, and Gulf hospitals—services are available for uninsured women and those on Medicare or Medicaid in Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Walton, and Okaloosa counties to detect breast cancer early.  Panama City News Herald
