- ➤ Javien Elliott, a Panama City native (former pro football player with experience in the NFL and CFL), was hired in August to manage the new MLK Recreation Center that will hold its grand opening around MLK Day, January 19. The 30,000 square foot facility (which includes STEM labs, teaching kitchens and outdoor courts) will offer programs for youth, adults and seniors as Elliott surveys community interest. - ➤ Craig Zar from Panama City set up his 'Skeleton Crew' display on Cherry Street with many skeletons (human and dog) to give trick-or-treaters fun on Halloween. He gives out (115-pounds) of candy and uses the display for other holidays like Thanksgiving and Easter. My Panhandle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bay District Schools approved new union contracts this week that will give teachers and support staff pay raises. Teachers will see starting salaries rise to $50,500 with a $500 raise before the holidays — support staff will have new pay schedules organized within 90 days based on their experience. WJHG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ SNAP benefits for November in Panama City will be delayed due to the ongoing federal government shutdown—October benefits remain secure as local food banks report increased demand and prepare to help more families once funding is restored. Panama City News Herald
- ➤ Bay County's annual Veterans Day Parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11 as the Bay County Board of County Commissioners partners with the Bay County Veterans Council to honor veterans.
