- ➤ WKGC aired a feature on October 30 that highlighted how The Church at the Beach and St. Andrew Christian Care Center—both Bay County organizations—helped local families by providing free meals, food pantries, and essential supplies. The Church in Panama City Beach offers a Monday community meal and pantry services, while St. Andrew in Panama City uses about 25 volunteers to distribute food, clothing, and household items. - ➤ Gulf Coast State College is one of 200 schools eligible for the $1M Aspen Prize — recognized for strong student outcomes like retention, completion and transfer rates. The college must submit its application by Nov. 13 or Dec. 9 while the winner will be announced in spring 2027. Panama City News Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On Oct. 29, World Stroke Day, Ascension Sacred Heart Bay offered advice on stroke prevention and treatment as doctors noted that a stroke cuts off oxygen to the brain. Dr. Muhammad Zaman Khan said stroke cases nearly doubled from 450 to close to 900 and urged exercise, sugar control, and managing risk factors (including high blood pressure, smoking, and diabetes) while the hospital stressed calling 911 immediately (using CT scans to identify the stroke type). - ➤ The Florida Department of Health in Bay County lifted the advisory for Panama City Beach's Russell Fields City Pier after tests on October 30 showed safe levels of Enterococcus bacteria—meeting state guidelines. WJHG
